- Efforts will concentrate on developing effective strategies for dealing with the numerous syntactic and lexical problems that one frequently encounters when translating from German into English. The goal is to provide students with the fundamental skills required in order to enable them to systematically translate texts into the target language, not as mere equivalents, but rather faithful conveyances of the original text, which accurately capture not only the message but also mood and style. Each lesson will focus on key aspects of translation which are relevant for both translation exams and real-life translation tasks.
- This course aims to enhance the student's awareness of his/her listening comprehension and oral skills in order to systematically develop them. By giving oral presentations and taking part in discussions, the student will have ample opportunity to actively speak English in class. The Aural-Oral course is also characterized by a strong emphasis on the development of listening skills. Listening comprehension skills are trained at home through continuous exposure to assigned audio and audio-visual texts which are then tested both in and outside of class. Vocabulary and pronunciation, two further crucial components of successful communication, will also be addressed and practiced in this course.

Anyone who has tried it can testify that it is no easy thing to translate into a foreign language. 'Wordwise' students will practice translating texts on a weekly basis which will prepare them for both translation exams and translation situations "in the real world". By means of presentations, group discussion, extensive research, and cooperation, the student will learn how to effectively deal with the challenges that commonly arise when translating from German into English.

In this class we will address the issues of finding, collecting, and practicing collocations by means of a wide range of activities and tasks.
